When and How to Take Zafirlukast

Following are some general considerations for when and how to take zafirlukast:
 
  • Zafirlukast comes in tablet form and is taken by mouth twice daily.
     
  • The medication should be taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after a meal.
     
  • Zafirlukast should be taken at the same time each day to maintain even levels of the drug in your blood.
     
  • For zafirlukast to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. The drug will not work if you stop taking it.
     

Zafirlukast Dosage

The dose of zafirlukast that your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
 
  • Your age
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may be taking.
     
As always, do not adjust your zafirlukast dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Zafirlukast Side Effects

As with any medicine, there are possible side effects with zafirlukast. However, not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate the drug well. When zafirlukast side effects do occur, in most cases they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.
