Xolair for Asthma

Xolair® (omalizumab) is used for preventing asthma attacks in people with asthma that is associated with allergens. Healthcare providers often recommend Xolair for asthma in people whose allergic asthma is not adequately controlled by inhaled corticosteroids.

The medication comes in injectable form and is available by prescription only. It belongs to a group of drugs called monoclonal antibodies, which work by binding to IgE antibodies (which play an important role in allergic reactions). Although Xolair is not a cure for asthma, it can help reduce asthma symptoms and prevent severe asthma attacks.

Before your healthcare provider prescribes Xolair for asthma, make sure he or she is aware if you are pregnant, have glaucoma or cataracts, or have never had chickenpox or the measles (and have not been vaccinated against these conditions).

(Click Xolair for more information on how Xolair works, how often the injections should be administered, and what side effects you should look out for during treatment.)
