Symbicort 80/4.5 Inhaler

Symbicort® (budesonide and formoterol) is a prescription drug approved for the treatment of asthma and COPD. It is a controller medication used to help prevent asthma attacks but not to treat them.

The medication comes in a metered-dose inhaler and is available in two strengths:

  • Symbicort 80/4.5 inhaler -- containing 120 inhalations with 80 mcg budesonide and 4.5 mcg formoterol per inhalation
  • Symbicort 160/4.5 inhaler -- containing 120 inhalations with 160 mcg budesonide and 4.5 mcg formoterol per inhalation.

The recommended Symbicort dosage for asthma depends on the type and dose of other asthma medications you may have taken in the past. Some people end up using the Symbicort 80/4.5 inhaler (two inhalations) twice daily, while others use the Symbicort 160/4.5 inhaler (two inhalations) twice daily.

For treating COPD, there is only one recommended dosage -- two inhalations of the Symbicort 160/4.5 inhaler twice daily.

(Click Symbicort Dosage for more information on what your healthcare provider will consider before making a dosing recommendation for your situation and to find out exactly how to use the inhaler.)
