Salmeterol is typically prescribed to treat airway spasms in people with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The drug works by relaxing muscles around the airways, which allows more air into and out of the lungs. Salmeterol comes in the form of an inhalation powder and is generally used twice daily. Possible side effects include sore throat, sinus congestion, and headaches.
