Pycnogenol and Pregnancy

No studies have been done on Pycnogenol and pregnancy, so it is unknown if it is safe for pregnant women to take this dietary supplement. Just because it is a "natural" product, this does not mean that Pycnogenol is safe for use during pregnancy. In fact, the manufacturer recommends that women avoid Pycnogenol during the first trimester of pregnancy due to potential birth defects.

Pycnogenol and Pregnancy: An Overview

Pycnogenol® is an extract of French maritime pine tree bark and is an active ingredient in many dietary supplements. It is not known if Pycnogenol is safe for use during pregnancy.

Is Pycnogenol Safe During Pregnancy?

The manufacturer of Pycnogenol recommends that women not take it in the first trimester of pregnancy. This is based on the general thought that a fetus is most susceptible to birth defects caused by substances that are used during the early stages of development.

There is no evidence to suggest that Pycnogenol is either safe or unsafe for pregnant women, as it has not been adequately studied in these women. Even though Pycnogenol is a "natural" product, this does not automatically imply that it is safe for use during pregnancy. After all, many poisons and toxins are also natural. Until more information is available, it may be a good idea to avoid Pycnogenol if you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant.

Remember, pregnancy is not a time to be experimenting with herbs, supplements, or medications. It is best to stick with products that are known to be safe during pregnancy. As a dietary supplement that has not been studied in pregnant women, Pycnogenol is not one of these products.
