Asthma Home > Proventil Dosage
For preventing asthma attacks with Proventil, dosage guidelines generally call for two sprays of Proventil four times a day. To treat an asthma attack, the dose of Proventil most healthcare providers recommend is two sprays from the inhaler as needed, as frequently as every four to six hours. Proventil dosing for preventing exercise-induced asthma is usually two sprays 15 minutes before exercising.
The dose of Proventil® (albuterol inhaler) your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
- Whether you use Proventil to treat or prevent asthma attacks
- The severity of your asthma or other respiratory problems
- Other medications you may be taking.
As is always the case, do not adjust your Proventil dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Proventil Dosing for Asthma
To treat an asthma attack, the recommended Proventil dose is two sprays of Proventil as needed, as frequently as every four to six hours. For some people, only one spray will be needed to control asthma symptoms.
Some people take Proventil only when needed, while others take it regularly to prevent asthma attacks. The dose for preventing asthma attacks is two sprays of Proventil four times daily. If you need to use your Proventil asthma inhaler more often than prescribed, talk to your healthcare provider about adding an additional asthma medication.
If Proventil is not adequately controlling an asthma attack, seek medical attention immediately, as this may be an emergency.
