Montelukast dosing guidelines take certain factors into account, such as a person's age and if other medications are being taken. When treating nasal allergies, the dose can range from 4 mg to 10 mg. To prevent exercise-induced asthma, the recommended dose for adults and adolescents age 15 and older is montelukast 10 mg, taken two hours before exercise.
An Introduction to Montelukast Dosage InformationThe dose of montelukast sodium (Singulair®) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
- Your age
- Other medical conditions you may have
- Other medications you may be taking.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Montelukast Dosing for AsthmaThe recommended montelukast dose for treating asthma in adults and adolescents age 15 and older is montelukast 10 mg a day. For children ages 6 to 14 years old, the recommended dose is montelukast 5 mg, taken once daily. For young children ages two to five years old, the recommended dose is montelukast 4 mg (either as a chewable tablet or packet of oral granules), taken once daily. For children age 12 to 23 months old, the recommended dose is one packet of montelukast oral granules (4 mg), taken once daily.
When treating asthma, it is generally best to take montelukast in the evening to prevent nighttime asthma symptoms.
To prevent exercise-induced asthma, the recommended dose for adults and adolescents age 15 and older is montelukast 10 mg, taken two hours before exercise. The recommended dose for children 6 to 14 years of age is 5 mg, taken two hours before exercise. The medication should not be taken more frequently than every 24 hours, and should not be taken before exercise if you are already taking it once a day to treat asthma
