Using Breathing Exercises as a Natural Remedy for Asthma

Breathing exercises may involve deep breathing with prolonged exhalation and a decreased rate of breathing. It has been suggested that this will improve asthma symptoms, although most studies have not shown that breathing exercises are particularly effective. However, in one study, the group who did breathing exercises reported fewer symptoms and a decrease in their use of inhaled medications compared to the group who did not do the breathing exercises.

Herbal Medications and Supplements

Herbal medications and supplements used to treat asthma symptoms are quite varied. One of the current supplements being studied is omega-3 fatty acid as a possible natural remedy for asthma. In studies conducted thus far, omega-3 fatty acid supplementation has not resulted in benefit or harm.
Supplementation with antioxidants has also been suggested, because people with severe asthma have been shown to have decreased antioxidants in their bloodstream. These studies have been inconclusive as well.
Currently, no herbal remedies for asthma are recommended to treat symptoms due to insufficient evidence.

How Effective Are These Home Remedies for Asthma?

So far, the asthma research studies have shown that these natural remedies have little to no benefit in the treatment of asthma. Each person responds differently to treatment, however, so you should discuss options with your physician and weigh the risks and benefits of each treatment type.
