Cromolyn Inhalation Dosage: An Introduction
Cromolyn inhalation (
Intal®) is a prescription medication used to prevent
asthma attacks.
Cromolyn inhalation comes in two forms: the cromolyn inhaler and cromolyn nebulizer solution, which is inhaled using a nebulizer (a device that changes liquid medications into fine droplets that are inhaled into the lungs).
The dose of cromolyn inhalation that your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
- Your age
- Whether you are using cromolyn nebulizer solution or the cromolyn inhaler
- The severity of your asthma
- Other medications you may be taking.
As is always the case, do not adjust your cromolyn inhalation dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
For adults and children age five and older, the recommended starting dose of cromolyn inhalation for asthma is two inhalations four times daily (taken on a regular basis). Lower dosages may be sufficient for young children.
For preventing predictable asthma attacks (such as those due to exercise, cold air, or exposure to an allergen), the recommended dose is two inhalations of cromolyn inhalation 10 to 15 minutes before the anticipated attack.
