Common Side Effects of Budesonide Inhalation

Budesonide inhalation has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials in which the side effects of a group of people taking the drug are documented and compared to another group not taking the medicine. As a result, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
 
In these studies, the most common budesonide inhalation side effects included:
 
  • An irritated or runny nose -- in up to 12 percent of people
  • Coughing -- up to 9 percent
  • Viral infections -- up to 5 percent
  • Thrush -- up to 4 percent
  • Vomiting -- up to 4 percent
  • Diarrhea -- up to 4 percent
  • Abdominal pain (or stomach pain) -- up to 3 percent
  • Ear infections -- up to 5 percent
  • Bloody nose -- up to 4 percent
  • Conjunctivitis ("pinkeye") -- up to 4 percent.
     

Budesonide Inhalation Side Effects to Report

There are a number of possible side effects with budesonide inhalation that you should report immediately to your healthcare provider, including, but not limited to:
 
  • Worsening of asthma
  • Frequent or severe infections of any type
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, including an unexplained rash, hives, itching, and unexplained swelling.
     

Less Common Side Effects of Budesonide Inhalation

There are other possible budesonide inhalation side effects that occur less frequently. These budesonide inhalation side effects occur in 1 to 3 percent of people. In the case of these possible side effects, it is difficult to tell whether they are actually caused by the budesonide inhalation medicine or by factors unrelated to the medication.
 
Some of these less common budesonide inhalation side effects include, but are not limited to:
 
  • Chest pain
  • Fatigue
  • Voice changes
  • A loss of appetite
  • Emotional changes
  • Muscle pain
  • Dry mouth
  • Weight gain
  • Migraine headaches
  • Insomnia.
