Asthma Prevention

There are several asthma prevention steps you can take to help control the condition. Suggestions for asthma prevention include seeing your doctor for regular checkups, taking your asthma medication as directed, and avoiding the things that can make your asthma symptoms worse.

 

Asthma Prevention: An Overview

We don't yet know how to prevent asthma, but there are some things that can lower a person's chances of an asthma attack.
 
Suggestions for asthma prevention include the following:
 
  • Learn about your asthma and how to control it
  • Use medications as directed by your doctor to prevent or stop attacks
  • If possible, avoid things that make your asthma worse
  • Get regular checkups from your doctor
  • Follow your asthma action plan.
     

Research Into Asthma Prevention

Scientists do not yet know how to prevent the inflammation of the airways that leads to asthma. Asthma research scientists are exploring some theories, including the following:
 
  • A possible relationship between smoking during pregnancy and asthma in children
  • The possibility that smoking may cause asthma in those who smoke
  • A possible link between obesity and asthma.
