Asmanex and Breastfeeding

Although it is not known whether the active ingredient in Asmanex (mometasone) passes through breast milk, it is thought that the medication is probably safe for most women who are breastfeeding. You should let your healthcare provider know (prior to taking Asmanex) if you are breastfeeding or thinking of breastfeeding. Together, you can make a decision concerning Asmanex and breastfeeding for your particular situation.

An Overview of Asmanex and Breastfeeding

Asmanex® (mometasone inhaler) is a prescription medication used to treat asthma. It is part of a group of medications called corticosteroids.

It is not known if mometasone (the active ingredient of Asmanex) passes through breast milk. Because of the potentially serious side effects that could occur in the nursing infant, the manufacturer of Asmanex recommends that women use caution when taking Asmanex while breastfeeding. Prior to taking Asmanex, you should make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you are breastfeeding or thinking of breastfeeding.

What Does the Research Say About Asmanex and Breastfeeding?

Although no research has been done to see if mometasone passes through breast milk, it is known that other corticosteroids pass through breast milk. Because blood levels of inhaled mometasone (the active ingredient of Asmanex) are usually very low, it is unlikely that mometasone would be passed through breast milk at high enough levels to cause problems. It is generally thought that Asmanex is probably safe for many women who are breastfeeding. If your healthcare provider recommends taking Asmanex while breastfeeding, be sure to watch for any side effects in your child.
